1452年、フィレンツェ近郊のヴィンチ村で公証人の父と下層階級の母の間に私生児として誕生。この複雑な出自が、正規の教育に縛られない自由な発想の源泉になったとも言われています。1
14歳頃、巨匠ヴェロッキオの工房に入門。ボッティチェリらと共に、絵画だけでなく鋳造や力学など多岐にわたる技術を習得し、万能の天才としての基礎を築きました。1
師匠との共作『キリストの洗礼』でレオナルドが描いた天使があまりに完璧だったため、師ヴェロッキオは弟子の才能に脱帽し、二度と筆を執らなくなったという伝説が残っています。1
30代でミラノ公ルドヴィーコ・スフォルツァに仕え、宮廷画家や軍事技師として活躍。この時期に傑作『最後の晩餐』を手がけ、彼の名声はイタリア全土に轟くことになります。1
晩年はフランス王フランソワ1世の招きを受け、アンボワーズのクロ・リュセ城で過ごしました。王は彼を父のように慕い、レオナルドはそこで『モナ・リザ』を抱えたまま息を引き取りました。1
2017年、彼の手によるものとされる『サルバトール・ムンディ』が、競売史上最高額の約4億5千万ドルで落札されました。死後500年を経てもなお、その価値は世界を驚かせ続けています。1
