Before becoming a painter at age 27, he worked as an art dealer and a missionary. His early works consisted mostly of still lifes and depictions of peasant laborers in somber tones.2

Moving to Paris in 1886, he met avant-garde artists like Gauguin and Bernard. This exposure led him to move beyond Impressionism, adopting a much brighter and more vibrant palette.2

In 1888, he moved to Arles to establish an artistic retreat. Inspired by the southern light, he painted masterpieces like the Sunflowers and local wheat fields, focusing on the natural world.2

His friendship with Gauguin ended after a violent confrontation where Van Gogh mutilated his own left ear. This incident marked a severe decline in his mental stability.2
