フィンセント・ファン・ゴッホ（1853-1890）は、オランダ出身の後期印象派の画家です。生前は精神的な苦悩と貧困に苦しみながらも、わずか10年の画業で約2,000点以上の作品を残しました。 牧師の家庭に生まれ、画商や教師を経て27歳で画家を志しました。パリで印象派や日本の浮世絵に触れ、色彩豊かな独自のスタイルを確立。南仏アルルでは「ひまわり」「星月夜」など代表作を制作しました。 激しい筆触と鮮やかな色彩は、表現主義やフォーヴィスムに大きな影響を与え、近代美術の父の一人とされています。
About the Artist
Life
- 画家になる前は画商や牧師として働いていましたが、挫折を経験し、27歳で本格的に絵を描き始めました。初期の作品は、労働者や静物を暗い色調で描いた写実的なものが中心でした。
- 1886年にパリへ移ると、ゴーギャンら前衛芸術家と交流し、印象派を超えた新たな表現を模索します。この時期を境に、彼の色彩はより明るく、鮮やかなものへと変化していきました。
- ゴッホは青年期にロンドン支店に転勤した後、憂鬱になりました。
- アルルでゴーギャンとの共同生活を始めますが、性格の不一致から衝突を繰り返します。激昂したゴッホが自らの左耳を切り落とすという衝撃的な事件により、二人の友情は破綻しました。
- ゴッホの芸術活動は、わずか10年ほどの期間に集中していました。
- 1890年に描かれた『悲しむ老人は』、ゴッホの初期の感情表現を示す作品です。
- ゴッホは幼少期から絵を描くことに興味を示していました。
Style & Technique
- 絵具を厚く盛り上げる「インパスト」技法や、うねるような筆使いは、彼の内面の激動を象徴しています。この情熱的なスタイルは、20世紀のフォーヴィスムに多大な影響を与えました。
