Timeline
JulRembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was born on July 15, 1606.1
Rembrandt spent a brief but crucial six-month apprenticeship with the history painter Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam, which significantly influenced his development as a historical painter.2
In 1625, Rembrandt opened a studio in Leiden, which he shared with friend and colleague Jan Lievens.1
In 1629, Rembrandt was discovered by the statesman Constantijn Huygens, who procured important commissions for him from the court of Prince Frederik Hendrik in The Hague.2
In 1634, Rembrandt married Saskia van Uylenburgh, the cousin of Hendrick van Uylenburgh.1
After moving to the Jewish quarter in Amsterdam in 1639, Rembrandt frequently sought his Jewish neighbors to model for his Old Testament scenes to achieve greater realism.2
The death of his wife Saskia in 1642 was a personal tragedy; his moving drawings of her on her deathbed reflect the deep emotional impact that influenced his later artistic style.2
His partner Hendrickje Stoffels was banned from communion for her relationship with him; they had a daughter, but Rembrandt never remarried to avoid losing access to Saskia's trust.2
In 1656, Rembrandt declared insolvency due to his lavish lifestyle and art collecting habit, leading to the sale of his house and assets, though his artistic reputation remained high.2
OctRembrandt died on October 4, 1669, at the age of 63.1
