葛飾北斎(1760-1849)は、江戸時代後期の浮世絵師・画家です。「富嶽三十六景」の「神奈川沖浪裏」は世界で最も知られた日本美術作品の一つです。 90年の生涯で画号を30回以上変え、「画狂老人卍」と号した晩年まで創作意欲は衰えませんでした。浮世絵だけでなく、読本挿絵、北斎漫画など多彩なジャンルで活躍しました。 その大胆な構図と色彩感覚は、印象派やアール・ヌーヴォーに影響を与え、世界で最も有名な日本人芸術家として知られています。
