エドゥアール・マネ（1832-1883）は、フランスの画家で「近代美術の父」の一人とされています。印象派の画家たちに多大な影響を与えましたが、自身は印象派展への参加を拒みました。 裕福な家庭に生まれ、スペイン絵画やベラスケスに影響を受けました。「草上の昼食」「オランピア」は当時のスキャンダルとなりましたが、伝統的な主題を現代的に解釈する革新的なアプローチは、美術史の転換点となりました。 平坦な色面と大胆な筆触は、印象派からポスト印象派へとつながる橋渡しとなりました。
