Timeline
19歳で勝川派の頭領である勝川春章に師事し、絵師としての活動を開始。当初は勝川派の様式を踏襲し、役者絵などを中心に手掛けていた。1
宗理時代には、富士額に瓜実顔の女性を描く「宗理型」と呼ばれる独自の様式を確立し、世評を得て大いに賞賛されることとなった。1
曲亭馬琴らと提携し、高い技術が要求される読本の挿絵制作に注力。北斎の発想力は読本の隆盛に大きく貢献したとされる。1
門人の増加や画風の普及を目的として絵手本の制作に取り組み、国内外に多大な影響を与えた『北斎漫画』の初編を刊行した。1
為一時代には、代表作『冨嶽三十六景』を始めとする風景版画を制作。北斎という画人を象徴する、錦絵に最も傾注した時期となった。1
75歳で富士図の集大成『富嶽百景』を上梓。自跋において、100歳を超えてもなお画道の奥義を極めようとする強い決意を表明した。1
晩年には信州小布施の門人高井鴻山を訪ね、同地で祭屋台の天井絵制作に携わるなど、肉筆画を中心に精力的な活動を続けた。1
嘉永2年に90歳で没した。最後の作品は『富士越龍図』とされるが、娘の葛飾応為が手掛けた可能性も推察されている。1
