His father Jan faced execution after an affair with Anna of Saxony, leading to family financial hardship until his release and the family's later reconversion to Catholicism.1
Born in 1577 in Siegen, Germany, to parents who were refugees from Antwerp. He moved back to Antwerp at around age 12.1
He was lifelong friends with Balthasar Moretus, head of the Plantin-Moretus publishing house, for whom he designed many frontispieces.1
In 1592, he began his artistic apprenticeship under landscape painter Tobias Verhaecht, later studying with Adam van Noort and Otto van Veen.1
He published 'Palazzi di Genova' in 1622, an influential book that helped spread the Genoese palace style throughout Northern Europe.1
