洋画家・中村研一（1895-1967）の「仕事」としての絵画制作と、日々の暮らしの中で生まれた「手遊び」としてのスケッチ、水彩、油絵、そして作陶という両側面から、その人間的魅力を概観。公募展出品作に見られる明快な色調と太いアウトラインの画風、コラム挿絵などの依頼仕事、そして手紙に添えられた絵や飼い猫の板絵、自らの暮らしのための作陶など、画家の多面的な活動を紹介。
