エドガー・ドガ（1834-1917）は、フランスの印象派画家・彫刻家です。バレエダンサーや競馬、洗濯女などを題材に、動きの瞬間を捉えた作品で知られています。銀行家の息子として生まれ、古典的な技法を学びながらも、大胆な構図と近代的な主題で独自の世界を築きました。印象派展には参加しましたが、自らを「写実主義者」と呼び、戸外制作より室内でのアトリエ制作を好みました。パステル画の革新的な使用と、写真的な構図の切り取りは、後の画家たちに大きな影響を与えました。

ドガは、1855年にジャン＝オーギュスト＝ドミニク・アングルに出会い、彼の「線を描け」という助言を深く受け止めました。
エドガー・ドガは1917年9月27日に83歳でパリにて亡くなりました。
ドガは、画家には個人的な生活があってはならないという考えから、晩年は孤立を深めていきました。
ドガは、印象派の創始者の一人と見なされていますが、自身は「印象派」という言葉を嫌い、リアリストと称されることを好みました。
ドガは、父オーギュスタン・ド・ガと、クレオールであった母セレスティーヌ・ミュッソン・ド・ガとの間に生まれました。
晩年、ドガは視力がさらに低下し、1912年頃には制作を停止したと考えられています。
