クロード・モネ（1840-1926）は、フランスの印象派を代表する画家です。「印象派」という名称は、彼の作品「印象・日の出」に由来しています。 光と色彩の移ろいを捉えることに生涯を捧げ、同じ題材を異なる時間や季節に描く連作シリーズで知られています。「積みわら」「ルーアン大聖堂」そして晩年の「睡蓮」シリーズは、光の変化を追求した集大成です。 パリ郊外ジヴェルニーに庭園を造り、そこで描き続けた睡蓮の連作は、抽象表現主義の先駆けとも評されています。
