近代文人画の巨匠・富岡鉄斎(1836～1924)は、十代の頃から文人として書画を嗜み、数え89歳で没する直前まで絵筆をとりました。青年期には絵の手ほどきを受けましたが特定の師にはつかず、古画を摸し、古書を読破することでさまざまな技法を習得し、独自の画境を拓きます。流派にとらわれない自由闊達な画風は人気を博し、大正6年には優秀な美術家に与えられる名誉職帝室技芸員に任命されました。「画を以て法を説く」という印章を愛用した鉄斎の作品は教訓的・勧戒的な画賛が多く難解ではありますが、豊富な画題や画風からは鉄斎の豊かな学識とユーモアを感じることができます。鉄斎美術館開館50周年を記念して約6年ぶりに開催する本展では、鉄斎の画業70年をたどり十九歳で摸写した《雉子図》から最晩年の名品《瀛洲僊境図》（九十歳落款）まで、各年代の代表作を紹介します。
