国立西洋美術館は今年、開館50周年を迎えます。この半世紀間は当館にとって、さまざまな研究活動や展覧会事業の蓄積の過程であったと同時に、なによりも作品収集、独自のコレクション形成の歴史でした。当初、フランス政府より寄贈返還された松方コレクション計370点とともに開館した当館は、それ以後の継続的な収集活動によって、今日では4,547点の所蔵作品（平成20年度時点）を抱えるに至っています。なかでも、開館当時には24点を数えるばかりであった版画のコレクションは、現在では3,747点にまで膨らみ、いまや当館の所蔵作品全体のなかにも、かなり大きな比重を占めるものへと成長しました。そこには、ルネサンス期のデューラーらにはじまり、17世紀のカロやレンブラント、18世紀のピラネージやゴヤ、19世紀のドーミエやクリンガーなどに至る、西洋版画史を語るうえで欠かすことのできない重要な芸術家たちの有品が、数多く含まれています。本展はこうした当館自身の版画コレクションを、若干の素描作例及び書籍とあわせた約130点によって、はじめてまとまった形で紹介する機会となります。
