洋画家・中村研一の戦後、明るい色彩とのびやかな筆致による女性像や室内画に至る画風の変化（メタモルフォーゼ）を、初期作品から対比的に紹介。太平洋画会や外光派の影響から、陰影のコントラストに特色を持つ画風、そして大胆なタッチ、色鮮やかな背景、黒い輪郭線へと変化する様子をたどる。戦時下の風景や兵士のエスキース、ライフワークとなった妻の単身像など、1920年代から60年代にかけての驚くべき作風の変化を楽しむ。
