帝室技芸員は、明治23年（1890）に設置された帝室（皇室）による美術工芸家の保護と制作を奨励する顕彰制度です。大正6年（1917）6月、富岡鉄斎（1836～1924）は帝室技芸員に任命されます。儒者を自任してきた鉄斎にとって、「技芸」を以っての選任は全く思いがけない出来事でしたが、今日なお「近代文人画の巨匠」と謳われる拠り所となっています。
