尾形光琳（1658～1716）によって生みだされた国宝「燕子花図屏風」は、『伊勢物語』の一節に基づくと考えられています。東国に下る途中の主人公が、三河国の八橋で燕子花の群生を目にし、「かきつばた」の五文字を各句の冒頭において「唐衣きつゝなれにしつましあれば はるばるきぬる旅をしぞ思ふ」と歌を詠む場面です。「燕子花図屏風」の象徴的な画面には、この歌が響き渡っているように感じられます。古来、歌と絵は密接な関係を結んできました。本展覧会では、和歌と関わりをもつさまざまな絵画作品を集め、そのなかで「燕子花図屏風」を味わってみたいと思います。あわせて、室町時代に制作された「伊勢物語絵巻」（個人蔵）3巻を特別に展示します。『伊勢物語』の世界に触れる絶好の機会ともなるでしょう。
