2015年は、享保元年（1716）に59歳で没した尾形光琳の300年忌にあたります。それを記念して、当館が所蔵する「燕子花図屏風」とＭＯＡ美術館が所蔵する「紅白梅図屏風」、光琳が描いた2点の国宝の屏風を中心とする特別展を開催します。このふたつの屏風にもうかがわれる光琳のデザイン性に、あらためて注目したいと思います。光琳は、京都の高級呉服商を生家として美しい衣裳に囲まれて育ち、また縁戚にもあたる本阿弥光悦や俵屋宗達によって生みだされた江戸初期の装飾芸術に親しみ、かつ新しい時代の感覚も取り込んで、独自の世界をつくりあげました。本展では、光琳の「模様」のような屏風の系譜を宗達からたどり、光悦に関わりのある雲母や金銀泥による木版摺りが光琳に与えた影響を探り、さらに漆器の図案や弟・乾山の陶器の絵付けなども含めたデザイナー・光琳の営みを総覧します。
