1918（大正7）年に日本画家の小野竹喬、土田麦僊らが創作の自由の場を求めて創設した「国画創作協会」を前身とする国画会は、絵画・版画・彫刻・工芸・写真の5部による美術団体であり、その展覧会「国展」は2026年に100回を迎えます。今日の多様化した美術の状況においても発足時から掲げられた「創作の自由を尊重するをもって第一義とす」の理念を貫いています。それらは国画会で主要作家として活躍した山形ゆかりの椿貞雄、土田文雄、新海竹蔵、鈴木実、桜井祐一らから、現在山形で活躍する作家の表現にも息づいています。国展100回記念五部合同企画展が全国で開催されるのを機に、本展では、国展5部門の作家の作品に山形ゆかりの作品を加え、国展の歴史とこれからを展望する機会とします。
