初代根津嘉一郎（号青山・1860〜1940）は、明治から大正期にかけて、いにしえより大切にされてきた古美術品がかえりみられることなく、欧米に売られている状況を見てこれを憂い、一層蒐集に励みました。そしてその遺志をついで美術品を戦火からまもりぬいた二代。財団創立75周年を記念する特別展として、書画と茶道具の名品を中心に初代のコレクションの軌跡を辿ります。
