菩薩（ぼさつ）とは、悟りを得たにもかかわらず、あえて人間界に降りて人間の苦楽に向き合い、救済の手をさしのべるほとけのこと。聖観音（しょうかんのん）、千手観音（せんじゅかんのん）など多くの種類をもつ観音菩薩、地獄に堕ちた者をも救ってくれる地蔵菩薩、釈迦如来の両脇にひかえる文殊菩薩（もんじゅぼさつ）や普賢菩薩（ふげんぼさつ）など、やすらぎを求める思いは多様な菩薩の造形を作り出しました。母のように、慈愛に満ちた、時に厳しい眼差しをなげかける菩薩の表現には、人々の切なる願いが込められています。根津美術館の仏教美術コレクションから、菩薩を表した飛鳥時代から江戸時代の彫刻・絵画、約40件の優品をご鑑賞ください。
