笠間日動美術館が所蔵する「山岡コレクション」は、ヤンマーディーゼル創業者である山岡孫吉氏が収集した初期洋画の宝庫と評される作品群です。本展では同コレクションを中心に、日本洋画の父と言われる高橋由一をはじめとして、黒田清輝、藤島武二、青木繁ら、日本洋画の礎を築いた巨匠たちの作品約150点を一堂に集め、幕末から明治にかけての日本近代洋画形成期を振り返ります。
