堀や川、海を利用した都市計画のもと整備された江戸は、水の恩恵を受けて繫栄した都市でした。日常風景には常に水が身近にあり、その様子は浮世絵にも多く描かれています。また、とどまることなく変化し続ける水は絵師の作画意欲をかき立てる主題であり、葛飾北斎の「諸国瀧廻り」に代表される名品も生まれました。本展では「生活」「形」「物語」という三つの視点から水の表現をたどります。つい見過ごしてしまいがちな、水にまつわる豊かな世界をお楽しみください。
