Life
- 詩人ボードレールは、ドラクロワを「情熱を情熱的に愛しながらも、それを可能な限り明快に表現しようと冷徹に決意していた」と評しました。この言葉は、彼の理性的かつ情熱的な制作姿勢を象徴しています。
- 1822年のサロンに出品された『ダンテの小舟』は、世間から激しい非難を浴びる一方で、政府に買い上げられるという異例の事態を招きました。この「批判と支持の対立」は、彼の生涯を通じて続くパターンとなります。
- テオドール・ジェリコーの精神的後継者とされるドラクロワは、名作『メデューズ号の筏』に強い衝撃を受けました。この出会いが、彼の初の大作『ダンテの小舟』を生み出す大きな原動力となったのです。
- 外交官タレーランはドラクロワのパトロンであり、実の父親であったという説が有力です。タレーランの匿名での支援や政治的保護があったからこそ、ドラクロワは批判に晒されながらも画壇での地位を確立できました。
Style & Technique
- 1825年のイギリス訪問でジョン・コンスタブルらの作品に触れたドラクロワは、色彩の扱いに開眼しました。帰国後、彼は自身の作品の空や風景に自由な筆致を加え、より鮮やかな色彩表現を取り入れるようになりました。
