我々は未知のものに対してしばしば恐怖を抱きます。それは好奇心と表裏一体であり、怖いけど見たい、といったアンビバレントな感情を誘発します横尾忠則は、見えるものや科学で説明できる領域外のものにも、一貫して関心を寄せてきました。それには、郷里の西脇での幼少期の体験が深く関わっています。都会ではありえない深い闇や、神秘的な体験の数々は、『江戸川乱歩全集』の挿絵を始めとするイラストレーションや、画家宣言以降の絵画作品にも色濃く反映されています本展は、そうした横尾の多彩な作品を通じて、「芸術」と「恐怖」との関係性について考察するものです
