生命力に満ち溢れた横尾忠則の作品には、常に「死」の影が漂います。骸骨や首吊りのロープのような暗示的な記号から、空襲で赤く染まった空、亡くなった同級生の写真など自身の記憶に由来するモチーフまで、横尾作品に散りばめられた様々な死の表現は、鮮やかに力強く、観る者を挑発します。本展の第1章では、死と再生の象徴である髑髏に加え、横尾独自の寓意に着目し、絵画をとおして横尾の死生観の形成を辿ります。
