From Yuichi Takahashi to Seiki Kuroda: Generational Shift in Meiji Western-style Painting
高橋由一から黒田清輝へ―明治洋画壇の世代交代劇―

明治27年、明治時代の洋画壇を切り開いた高橋由一が没した。その前年の明治26年、フランスで洋画を学んだ黒田清輝が帰国し、「外光派」と呼ばれる新しい洋画を日本にもたらした。ともに「近代洋画の父」とも称される由一と黒田は、まるで交代劇を演じるかのように入れ替わったのである。幕末から明治初期に来日した外国人画家に絵を学び「旧派」や「脂派」と呼ばれる画派となった由一の世代と、欧米に留学し本場の文化に触れながら直接油絵を学び「新派」や「紫派」、「外光派」と呼ばれた黒田の世代には、同じ明治洋画でありながら大きな断絶がある。本展では、高橋由一と黒田清輝の相違を比較しながら、両者の師弟や同時代画家らの作品も併せて展示し、明治洋画壇で起きていた世代交代劇を検証した。高橋由一《鮭図》（山形美術館蔵）や黒田清輝《婦人像（厨房）》（東京藝術大学大学美術館蔵）をはじめとした有名作品に加え、重要文化財の原田直次郎《靴屋の親爺》（東京藝術大学大学美術館蔵）、山形県指定文化財の高橋由一《山形市街図》（山形県蔵）といった重要作品2点も展示することができ、来館者の増加につなげることができた。
