二度のヨーロッパ旅行の作品をまとめた『植田正治小旅行写真帖 音のない記憶』は、1974年に出版されています。1972年、初めての海外旅行に挑み夢中でシャッターを切った、という話とは別に、この本の出版にあたっては、写真家のこだわりを雄弁に物語るエピソードがあります。最初の旅行から戻った植田は、すぐに写真集の制作を思い立ち、デザインは、旅行にも同行した次男・充が中心となり、出版社は日本カメラ社、そして著名な文筆家の寄稿も予定され、1973年6月の発行を前提に宣伝も展開されていきました。しかし、植田は印刷の直前、出版を突然白紙にもどし、1973年11月、前年と同じ季節にヨーロッパを訪れ再度撮影を重ねています。この二回目の撮影の成果が加えられ、実際に写真集が出版されたのは1974年8月のことでした。植田がなぜ出版直前まで進んでいた写真集を中断したのか、その明確な理由はわかりませんが、植田の生家には、中断前、つまり出版されなかった写真集の色校正（印刷前の最終段階のテストプリント）の一部や宣伝用のパンフレットの色校正が遺されていました。この色校正の存在は、今回の調査の良き指針となり、ネガ、資料などとあわせ、シリーズ〈音のない記憶〉のより詳細な検証が可能となりました。今回の展覧会では、今まで、ほとんどのイメージが一回目のものか二回目のものか、推測すらできなかったものを可能な限り判別しながら、写真集に収録されなかったイメージも含め紹介します。植田の遺したいわば「音のない“ふたつ”の記憶」をたどりながら、この写真集、そしてこのシリーズに対する植田の情熱、こだわりを感じとっていただけることでしょう
