物語は、古くから絵に描かれ、楽しまれました。たとえば、伊勢物語の存在がはじめて文献上に知られるのは源氏物語のなかですが、そこにおいて伊勢物語はすでに絵巻として登場します。もちろん源氏物語も、成立後まもなく絵に描かれ始めたと考えられています。また、中世まではもっぱら絵巻や冊子、色紙といった小画面に描かれた物語絵は、近世になると大画面の屏風にも描かれるようになり、物語が室内を彩りました。このたびの展覧会では、伊勢や源氏の王朝文学から平家物語、曾我物語、西行物語、そして酒呑童子をはじめとするお伽草子まで、さまざまな物語を描いた多彩な形式の絵画作品を集めます。晩秋のひとときを、物語と絵とともにお過ごしください。
