ミケランジェロ・ブオナローティ（1475-1564）は、ルネサンスの頂点を極めた、西洋美術における最も偉大な芸術家の1人です。本展覧会は、「神のごとき」と称され、生前から現在に至るまで深く崇敬を集めるミケランジェロの創造の軌跡とその波紋を、彼の子孫のコレクションを引き継ぐカーサ・ブオナローティ（フィレンツェ）の所蔵品60点によって紹介するものです。ミケランジェロの作品・資料に関しては世界一の質と量を誇る同館の全面的な協力を得たことで、フレスコ画や巨大な石彫といった持ち運び不可能な作品によって主に知られるこの芸術家の個展を、日本で開催することが可能となりました。
