日本に天台宗を広め、仏教界に新風を吹き込んだ伝教大師・最澄（767～822）の1200年の大遠忌を記念し、日本天台宗の始まりから、その教えの広がり、天台思想が生んだ様々な文化、現代へのつながりを、全国に散らばる名宝の数々でたどります。延暦寺の最澄ゆかりの名品をはじめ、関西だけでなく、東北や北陸、中国、四国などに伝わる天台美術の粋ともいえる様々な宝物、貴重な秘仏など、国宝23件を含む130件が京都に一堂に集結します。京都からは、少し足を延ばすだけで天台宗の名跡に容易にアクセスできます。まさに町ぐるみの壮大なスケールをもつ必見の展覧会です。
