Luca Giordano

OctLuca Giordano was born in Naples on October 18, 1634, and died in the same city on January 3, 1705.¹

Around 1650, Giordano became an apprentice to Jusepe de Ribera in Naples, and his early work was heavily influenced by his teacher's naturalistic and dark style.²

Giordano’s earliest dated work is of 1651.³

In 1658, the year of his marriage to Margherita Dardi, Giordano painted two impressive and celebrated altarpieces.¹

The influence of Paolo Veronese's rich banquet scenes predominated in Giordano's works such as 'The Marriage at Cana,' featuring rich color and light.²

During his time in Venice, he united Venetian sources like Titian with the art of the Roman Baroque to create a highly personal idiom.²

In the late 1670s, he began great fresco cycles using daringly foreshortened figures to create a sense of depth in low domes.²

Supported by influential patrons like the del Rosso family in Florence, he painted masterpieces including the dome of the Corsini Chapel.²

In 1692 Luca Giordano went to Spain at the invitation of Charles II, serving as court painter.³
