Timeline
Born in Seligenstadt, Germany, Memling served his apprenticeship in Brussels under the Early Netherlandish master Rogier van der Weyden.1
He became a citizen of Bruges in 1465, where he established a large workshop and remained a leading artist until his death.1
His masterpiece 'The Last Judgment' was captured by privateer Paul Beneke while being shipped to Florence and is now in Gdańsk, Poland.1
A 1480 tax document lists him among the 875 wealthiest citizens of Bruges, indicating his significant financial success as a painter.1
In his later years, he created masterpieces like the 'Shrine of St Ursula' for the Hospital of St. John in Bruges, where they remain today.1
