Timeline

1860

Raised in an intellectual family with an archaeologist father and painter mother, Polenov's childhood travels sketching ancient Russian sites with his father laid the foundation for his historical interest and realist skills.1

1863

His great-grandfather was the first Russian jurist to advocate for the abolition of serfdom. Polenov, who studied law alongside art, inherited a progressive spirit valuing democracy and social progress.1

Studying under Pavel Chistyakov at the Academy, he met lifelong friend Rafail Levitsky. They lived together in an attic, which Polenov later immortalized in his famous painting 'Grandmother's Garden' (1878).1

1871

After winning a Gold Medal for a biblical painting in 1871, he received a scholarship to Europe. This success launched his career as the 'Knight of Beauty,' blending Russian traditions with European techniques.1

1873

In Italy, he was captivated by the colorist Paul Veronese, noting the 'taste of life' in his figures. Polenov integrated this rich sense of color into his own landscapes and historical paintings.1

In Rome, he met the philanthropist Savva Mamontov. Together, they planned the 'Abramtsevo Circle,' a multidisciplinary artist colony that became a driving force in the golden age of Russian art.1

Establishing a studio in Montmartre, Paris, he experimented with ceramics and etching under Bogolyubov. This period of exploration led him to conclude that his true talent lay in landscapes.1

1874

During a 1874 stay in Normandy with Ilya Repin, he embraced the Barbizon School's influence, working en plein air. This marked the beginning of Impressionistic landscape painting in Russia.1
