山形美術館の開館後間もない1968年、当時の山形銀行会長であった長谷川吉郎氏より、○山長谷川家歴代が収集した美術品163点が寄贈された。以降1994年には○谷長谷川家より当時の殖産銀行（現・きらやか銀行）会長・長谷川吉内氏の遺志を継いだ長谷川憲治氏より81点、翌95年に再び○山長谷川家より48点が追加寄贈され、全292点で構成される「長谷川コレクション」は、当館の日本美術の中核をなすコレクションとして親しまれている。本展では、紅花商人であった長谷川家が守り伝えてきた作品を、季節ごとテーマを設け通年にわたり紹介する。
