本展覧会は山形県の美術振興と美術家のレベル向上を目指して毎年開催している県内最大の公募展で、「県美展」の愛称で親しまれています。日本画、洋画、彫刻、工芸、イラストレーションの５部門で作品を一般公募し、国を代表する作家を各部門の審査員として招き、指導を受けるのもこの展覧会の大きな特徴です。また委嘱、無鑑査などの作品も展示します。本展会期中は、幼稚園から中学生までの児童・生徒の絵を展示する「第68回こども県展」も同時開催いたします。
