「玉手箱」や「箱入り娘」といった言葉があるように、ものを収納する容器の一つである箱は、古代から現代にいたるまで、人々の生活や信仰・藝術に深く関わってきました。内容品の保護・整理・運搬といった実用性に加え、精緻な装飾や象徴的な意匠、そして蓋の表裏に記された箱書きに至るまで——箱は時として、持ち主の想いを内に秘め、また時を越えて語るメディアでもありました。本展では、箱の機能と美に着目しながら、その魅力に迫ります。
