浦上玉堂（1745-1820）は、岡山藩の支藩鴨方藩士として生まれ、「自分は絵の描き方を知らず、気ままに描くのだから画人というのは恥ずかしい」と記すように、専門画家であることを否定し、本分は七絃琴を以て「音律を正す」ことを願う「琴士」であると公言していた。しかしながら、当時から豊後（現・大分県）出身の南画家田能村竹田（1777-1835）などは、玉堂画の真価を理解し、それを高く評価していた。江戸時代後期には、関東では谷文晁（1763-1840）を中心としていわゆる「関東南画」が隆盛するが、ほぼ同時期を生き た西の浦上玉堂はそのような「学画の徒たち」とは一線を画したまさに「文人画家」という言葉がぴったりの人物といえる。本展により、自由奔放でありながら情緒に溢れ、リズミカルで親しみやすい画風となり、それが近代以降の芸術家や素封家たちからも人気を得ることになった玉堂の魅力を紹介することができた。
