「昭和100年」、「戦後80年」という節目の年となる今年、美術を手がかりとして、1930年代から1970年代の時代と文化を振り返る展覧会を開催します。絵画や写真や映画といった視覚的な表現が果たした「記録」という役割と、それらを事後に振り返りながら再構成されていく「記憶」の働きに注目しながら、過去を現在と未来につなげていく継承の方法を、美術館という記憶装置において考察するものです。しばしば美術は「時代を映し出す鏡」と言われます。その視覚的なイメージには、作家の感性を介して、制作時の世相や文化が刻印されています。それだけではありません。美術は時代を超えて生き続けることにより、後の世代によって新たに意味づけられるものでもあります。つまり美術が映し出すのは、作品が生み出された過去の一点から現在に至る時間の流れの中での、人々の美意識や社会と歴史を見つめる眼差しの変化なのです。今、戦争体験を持たない世代が、どのように過去に向き合うことができるかが問われています。それは他でもない、現在を生きる私たちの実践にかかっているといえるでしょう。戦争記録画を含む当館のコレクションを中心に他機関からの借用を加えた計280点の作品・資料で構成される本展覧会を通して、美術に蓄えられた記録をもとに新たな戦争の記憶を紡ぎだすことを試みます。美術館がこのような記憶を編む協働の場になることができれば幸いです。
