植田正治は、1930年代、カメラ雑誌への投稿、地元の写友会や倶楽部への参加を通して写真の歩みを始めています。表現の可能性を探求する多くのアマチュア写真家が切磋琢磨し、さまざまな活躍をみせ、多くの逸材を輩出した時代でした。植田は、この良き時代に写真を愛する先達や仲間たちから多くを学び、徐々に自身のスタイルを確立していきます。後に植田自身が語るように、この頃に培った「アマチュア精神」、つまり写真を純粋に楽しむ姿勢が植田の写真を特徴づける重要な要素となっています。そんな植田は、生涯を通じてアマチュアに向けて多くの言葉を発信しています。1940年のアルス写真文庫『田園の写し方』をはじめ多くの雑誌での執筆など、さまざまな形でメッセージを遺しているのです。被写体に対する取り組み方からテクニックに関することまで多岐にわたる文章は、「写真すること」の楽しさや意味など多くを語りかけています。また同時に、時代によって多彩な表現に挑み続けた植田が、まるで自身のスタンスを確認し、写真に対しての初心を忘れぬように自身に語りかけているかのようにも感じられます。今回の展覧会は、「写真の教室」と題し、植田がアマチュアに向けた多彩なメッセージとともに、その時々の作品を紹介します。写真家として高く評価された後も、植田が自分の写真を見失うことのないよう抱き続けた「アマチュア精神」をあらためて浮き彫りにします。
