1988年、植田正治は、雑誌（『太陽』1989年1月号）の企画で東北、北陸を旅し、松尾芭蕉（1644-1694）の「おくのほそ道」をテーマに撮影しています。依頼による撮影ではあったのですが、同行した編集者が驚くほど、旺盛な好奇心で意欲的に取り組んだようです。「月日は百代の過客にして行きかふ年もまた旅人なり」ではじまる紀行文学の古典の世界を辿りながら、植田は自身の写真人生を重ねあわせたことでしょう。
