植田正治（1913-2000）の作品の中に1950年代に撮影された「かたち」と呼ばれる作品群があります。主に民具や民家の一部などを被写体とし、その本来の用途とは別に、ユニークなかたちに着目したイメージの数々です。これらの作品は、発表当時にシリーズ〈かたち〉といった名称で発表されたものではありませんが、植田自身が晩年にこれらの作品を〈かたち〉と呼んでいたため、このシリーズ名が定着しました。植田にとって1950年代は、独自のスタイルである砂浜や砂丘での演出写真から離れ、あらたな表現を模索していた時期であったと言えます。砂丘という特殊な空間から離れ、身近な民具や山陰の風景などに着目し、さまざまな表現を試行錯誤することは、のちに高く評価される〈童暦〉のシリーズへの序章であったようにも感じます。もちろん、植田の作品には、戦前から被写体のフォルムや画面構成を強く意識した作品が多く見られ、その傾向は80年代のファッション写真、そして晩年まで変わることはありませんでした。今回の展覧会では、これまであまり注目されることのなかったシリーズ〈かたち〉と呼ばれる作品群、および同時期に撮影された風景を中心に、初期から晩年までの植田の造形的なまなざしに注目し、紹介します。
