「まなざしの交差」と題した今回の展覧会のテーマは、「撮ること」と「撮られること」です。カメラを向けられ、素直に反応する無邪気な子どもたちや素朴な人々の姿は、植田正治の写真の中で特に印象的です。そこにカメラがある事を意識させないように撮ることが“自然”であるという考え方もありますが、植田は、「人にカメラを向けた時に、カメラを意識するなということの方が不自然だ」と語ります。つまり「カメラを意識させ、真正面から撮る」ことは、被写体とストレートに、そして真摯に向きあうことの表明であり、それによって生じる様々なコミュニケーションを植田は楽しんだのでしょう。
