19世紀のフランスでは、産業革命を経て都市の近代化が進みました。自然科学の発達に伴い実証主義的な精神が広がり、自然主義や写実主義の動向が登場します。バルビゾン派のミレーは農民の主題に生涯を捧げました。やがて、モネやルノワールら光と色彩を追求した印象派が登場し、絵画に革新をもたらします。印象主義のスタイルが普及した1880年代以降、ポスト印象主義の時代に絵画は多彩な広がりをみせます。本展では、 バルビゾン派から印象派を経てナビ派へといたる19世紀フランス絵画の流れを、フランスとイギリスの美術館、個人所蔵家から出展された、 ミレーの絵画7点やモネ《睡蓮〉を含む約70点の名品により展望します。
