慶長年間（1596～1615）を境に、それ以前に作られた刀剣を「古刀」、それ以降に作られた刀剣を「新刀」と呼び習わしています。新刀は戦乱で荒廃した京都が復興する過程で生まれ、その後全国へと展開し、鎌倉時代に次ぐ刀剣の黄金期を迎えました。この展示では新刀期の山城（京）鍛冶の双璧をなす三品派と堀川派の名品を紹介いたします。華やかでエネルギッシュな新刀の魅力をご堪能ください。
