吉山明兆(きっさんみんちょう、1352〜1431)は、室町時代前期の東福寺で活躍した禅僧画家です。13世紀中頃、南宋に留学した円爾(えんに)により京都の東山に開かれた東福寺は、日本最大級の禅宗寺院で、中国大陸の最新の仏教文物や知識を膨大に蓄えていました。明兆は寺を荘厳(しょうごん)するためそれらを活用し、大伽藍の儀式にふさわしい巨幅や連幅を多数描きました。また彼は特に水墨表現に熟達して一大流派を築き、後世、日本の水墨画を確立させた最重要人物の一人として仰がれるようになります。本展示では「五百羅漢図」を中心に、彼の幅広い画業とその意義をご紹介します。
