日常のコミュニケーションの中で“かわいい”という言葉が色々な場面で使われている。日本では古くから“かわいい”ものを愛でる独自の文化があり、日本語の“かわいい”には、様々なニュアンスが含まれている。本展では、美術作品に表現された身近な犬や猫、鳥やリス、フクロウなどの小動物、愛らしい季節の草花、無邪気で微笑ましい子ども、“ゆるかわ（ゆるくてかわいい）”の僧・布袋さんや南画に描かれた人物、さらには着物や工芸作品のデザインまで、幅広い作品に注目した。可憐なもの、幼いもの、小さいもの、素朴なもの等々の“かわいい”をキーワードに、日本美術の新たな魅力を探った。
