美術家たちは自らの心の中で作り出したイメージを様々な手法で表現している。江戸時代の南画家たちは、見ることのできない中国の仙境を心の中でイメージを膨らませながら描き出した。近代に入ると眼に見える世界を超越した心の内面を表現しようとする美術家たちがあらわれる。日本画家・髙山辰雄は、自然と人間とのつながりや、生命の不思議に思いをめぐらせ、その思念の先に紡ぎ出した象徴的なイメージを通じて独自の画境を切り拓いた。洋画家・糸園和三郎は、シュルレアリスムを創作の起点として、静謐な心象風景の中に、現代に生きる人々の不安や孤独を詩情豊かに描き出した。本展は「生誕 120 周年 サルバドール・ダリ」展の開催にあわせて、大分県立美術館のコレクションより人間の心の内面を写し出した作品を紹介した。
