He stayed in Italy from around 1607, where he encountered Caravaggio's innovative style. He is considered the only Dutch painter to have been in Rome during Caravaggio's lifetime.1

Along with Gerrit van Honthorst, he was a key figure of the 'Utrecht Caravaggisti,' bringing the latest Italian trends back to the Netherlands and revolutionizing the local art scene.1

He passed away in 1629 at the age of 42, likely a victim of the plague. His eighth child was born just four months after his death.1

After his death, his son Richard worked to rehabilitate his father's reputation, securing a letter of appreciation from the famous painter Adriaen van der Werff in 1707.1
