Timeline

1610

Born in Antwerp in 1610, he studied under his father, David Teniers the Elder. He had to support his family by making copies of old masters as his father was frequently in financial trouble and even jailed for debt.1

1636

In 1636, he participated in Rubens' project to decorate the Torre de la Parada for King Philip IV of Spain, creating a painting based on Rubens' design.1

1637

In 1637, he married Anna Brueghel, daughter of Jan Brueghel the Elder. Rubens served as a witness at the wedding, and Rubens' second wife later became the godmother to Teniers' first child.1

1650

Around 1650, he moved to Brussels to serve as court painter and curator for Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, the Governor General of the Habsburg Netherlands.1

1651

He acquired about 400 paintings from the collection of the Duke of Hamilton (formerly of Charles I). This collection became the foundation of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.1
