Timeline
At 18, Church became the pupil of Thomas Cole, founder of the Hudson River School. Cole praised him as having 'the finest eye for drawing in the world,' and Church's talent allowed him to turn professional after only two years.1
In 1848, at age 22, he was elected the youngest Associate of the National Academy of Design. Promoted to full member the following year, he became a leading figure and celebrity in the American art world.1
Church traveled to South America in 1853 and 1857, sketching volcanoes and tropical landscapes in Ecuador. These sketches were later transformed into massive canvases in his New York studio, enthralling American audiences.1
His South American trips were financed by businessman Cyrus West Field, who hoped Church's paintings would lure investors to his business ventures in the region by showcasing its majestic beauty.1
